• Ok there is no actual treasure, except of course knowledge for your AS level exam which is worth more than gold, obviously!

    Ok

Step 1: Use your phones to find @mrsloan on twitter

    Step 2: Follow him

Step 3: Find the tweet that gives you a link to the BFI statistical year book

Step 4: Write 5 interesting statistics about the UK film industry this year.

Step 5: Find 5 news or internet articles about Film marketing this year. Post the links on your blog but summarise the content of the article into a sentence or two, explaining why this is relevant to your exam.

Step 6: Post up information about the marketing and promotion of your two case study films.

Step 7: Post up the two film posters and any trailers for your films plus examples of their other forms of cross promotion, merchandise, viral videos etc.

Step 8: tweet @mrsloan with a link to your days work.

When complete...Relax..You are a media guru. Ommmmmmmmmmm !

  • Today's lesson: Target Audiences.

You need to design a T.A.P that is detailed and helps inform how your magazine will look and what it will contain.

Here are a couple of examples

I want them on your blogs before thursday!

    Get to work!
  • I would never ever advise that you write LOL but actually this story is quite funny so .. LOL..

    http://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/jan/10/noel-clarke-storage-24-lowest-grossing-us-film

The guy who brought you Kidulthood and Adulthood made a film called Storage 24 and it made a wopping... $44!!! In the whole of America ! Your cowboy films could have made more !

How could you use this type of relevant contemprary example in your exam?

  • I have just recieved this email from the people at Hackney Picture House:

You should all apply immediatley ! This is a great opportunity for you to get much needed help for your research project that you will present in your exam. Let me know if you have any questions but really just get emailing that email address above and ask for a place.

    Good Luck

  • For those of you who weren't in today:

We looked at a couple of clips, the wolf of wall street trailer (embedded in the prezi) and also the ocr exam from a couple of years ago which was from the tv drama ... fingersmith! (embedded below). Try writing 5 or 6 excellent exam style sentences about the representations of characters, using a sound term.

  • 19.12.13

    4. Sketch rough versions of photos and put them on blog
  • http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/06/swedish-cinemas-bechdel-test-films-gender-bias

"You expect movie ratings to tell you whether a film contains nudity, sex, profanity or violence. Now cinemas in Sweden are introducing a new rating to highlight gender bias, or rather the absence of it.To get an A rating, a movie must pass the so-called Bechdel test, which means it must have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man."

So in Sweden movies have to pass the test in order to shown or made ! Maybe we should introduce that here in the UK? I don't think its going to happen though!

The article above does raise some good points towards the end about the problems of using this kind of simple rule to decide whether a movie is 'good for gender' or not

Will it make a difference? Who knows but at least it will make people think about the issue next time they go the cinema.

  • We havent really covered this topic yet but i found this website today that lets you rent new movies and thought it was too important to forget. Especially as this is a huge part of your exam andyour case study films may have used this type of distribution model. Anyway it might be something you talk about in your exam:

    DISTRIFY

For instance you could watch one of this years greatest movies now on this page without even thinking about it. For money though obviously!

  • Today you should be ready to present your two case study films. Studying and researching this should be fun: Just like marketing movies obviously is for these two actors :

Instead of standing up and talking through them i thought it might be better if you spent the time learning how to organise and manage your film notes on your blog:

    You need to:

    1. create a new page of your blog
    2. Then upload your presentation to it.
    3. Then visit at least 6 other blogs from people in the class and comment on their presentations / research

Then once you have done that and you are happy with your blog your are going to try and find as many useful Film Industry web links as you can. Each week i will be pointing you into a different area of research and its important you can build up a database of websites to help you find information.

My top 3 are on this post here:

    So to do this:

    4. Make a list of useful weblinks on your film industry page
    5. Copy and paste this list as a comment on this post (so that i can collate the links into a mega super amazing list for us all to share !)

    Easy !

  • Just as a little helpful reminder to those of you that weren't in or have forgotten:

    Wednesday (tomorrow) 11th of December:

Your two film case study presentations need to be ready.

    Thursday 12th Dec.

Magazine title designs and audience feedback needs to be presented on your blogs.

    Monday 16th Dec:

Representation presentations will be given in lesson on Monday and Tuesday. Make sure you have a detailed presentation with lots of examples.

Do not miss these deadlines !

  • Representations of Ethnicity:

    1. Go to youtube and find the clip HOTEL BABYLON G321 (jan 10)
    2. Watch it and make notes as if you were in an exam
    3. Open quicktime and make a new screen recording of you and your partner talking about the representations on offer in the clip
    4. Export it  (save it) and upload it to your blog

Extension: Find your own clip from TV drama to analyse and explain the representations

  • As part of your research you should try and familiarise yourself with other students' work from other schools. What grade do you thin these would get and why?
Here is an excellent blog: Grade A and here is one that err.. isn't very excellent

  • So for your case studies you need to pick two films that demonstrate different sides of the industry. One should be a huge blockbuster type production and the other a much smaller independent film. But what does actually make a film British:

So 'but what is a case study?' i hear you cry well here is a good example: Yours should be like this and explain key facts aroudn teh key stages of the film cycle. PRODUCTION > DISTRIBUTION > EXHIBITION . Any questions then comment here. Good luck

  • Ok so its only fair we look at masculinity after we explored femininity yesterday.

  • Are Mainstream Media Representations of women overwhelmingly negative?

At least 2 sides of A4
    Intro (outline concerns initial arguments)
Uses theories (Male Gaze, Goffman's theory, Bechdel test)
Lots of examples from a range of media
    Explains the key arguments
    Counter arguments
Conclusion (summary, your view, how can it change etc)

If you need any more help with writing this then come and see me for more help

  • So hopefully (if Georgina remembers to bring her DVD in) we will be watching Pulp Fiction on Monday after school. Its quite long so if people get tired we might watch it over two weeks. It's an incredible film featuring amazing performances and hilarious. creative dialogue. Surely one of the greatest breakthrough independent mainstream cross over hits of all time.. i'll stop talking now..

Just come and watch it, bring yourselves, bring a friend, but most of all bring some popcorn !
  • UPDATES UPDATES UPDATES !! This is your major problem ! There is nowhere near enough information on your blogs. Your blogs are the most improtant thing in your lives right now !!!

I am sending them off to the examiner so please update them !!

You must finish the FRONT COVER + CONTENTS PAGE and do three updates !

If not there will be serious consequences ! Err..... Seriously !

This is a picture of Hard work !
  • Some theory for you :

    Read it, that's all !
  • Here is a great competition for you to enter:

The theme is : superheroes !

Surely you can make and amazing 1 minute film and win this therefore catapulting yourself into international stardom ??

  • After our amazing trip to the BFI i know you all raring to go and jump into a pil;e of books and articles about the british film industry so i thought i would give you a few helpful links here.

Remember this is a research and presentation of knowledge based task so teh person who knows the most and has the most interesting facts and case study examples will get the best grade. You get few marks for style and grammar etc so dont think you can rock up on the day and ace this. You actually need to know stuff.. this isnt Maths !

    (sorry maths department)

Anyway here are some brilliant links to help you:

    http://www.the-numbers.com/

    http://www.bfi.org.uk/sites/bfi.org.uk/files/downloads/bfi-statistical-yearbook-2013.pdf

  • Ok here it is the amazing, brilliant, badly spelt collection of editing clips.

Well done though , this is decent work for one lesson!

Year 12 students try and exemplify all known editing techniques ... ex from Mr Sloan on Vimeo.

  • Thanks to all the class (minus 3 who missed out) who came to the year 12 study day at the British Film Institute last Friday for a study and preperation day for your upcoming exam on the British Film Industry. It was great to see you all asking questions infront of you peers and enjoying talking about the film industry and  listening so well to actual real people who work in the industry rather than just your teacher telling you about it.

Im sure you had a great day. Hopefully you learnt a lot to get you thinking about your research projects on British vs Hollywood film.

Here is a trailer for a film we will probably watch soon, its this year's 'fish tank' apparently:

  • So at the end of last term you guys completed a short mock exam style analysis, and generally it was very pleasing to see you all attempt it so well. For your first effort at this kind of exam you all did well. In today's lesson we will be analysing the clip in a bit more detail in order to get you thinking about the techniques involved and also going over exam technique.

I had a go at screen capturing some analysis of the clip , but its a bit embarrassing so i will leave it for you guys to do this afternoon !

Mise en scene primeval analysis 1 from Mr Sloan on Vimeo.

  • I knew it someone else cares about Media Education other than me !!

    http://schoolsimprovement.net/media-education-now-a-must-in-schools/

It is not sufficient to leave media education to the individual enthusiastic teacher. As leading UK media educationist Cary Bazalgette says: “If media education is worth having, then everyone should have it.”

Yeaaaaaaahhhhhhh wot she said etc etc !

  •

So after the great success of Film club in its first half term i have decided to let the year 10 seniors make a trailer each week for the upcoming movie. Next week on monday we will be watching ....
  • Year 10s you need to finish your coursework analysis of two magazines over half term. You could use the two below or get your own ones.

  • So i know your al filming your projects but its important to keep aware of ideas and techniques used in professional products. Here is a nice article highlighting some of the year's best videos:

    http://www.stereogum.com/1357681/stereogums-top-25-music-videos-of-2013-so-far/video/

    Enjoy
  • I still haven't received all of your url addresses for your blogs yet so make sure you let me know what they are please.

When you have done that you can have a go at this:

    Creating random CD covers:

To get the name of your band you need to use this link:

Whatever comes up that is the name of your group / artist

Then do it again , this will give you the name of your Album

Then find a random picture from this site:

When you have them try and combine them in photoshop or even in word

Then post the best ones at your blog

My best effort is above. Hopefully yours will be better.
  • Homework:

After today's lesson on camera shots you need to analyse a scene from a movie or tv drama and comment on how the director has used camera shots.

    Here is an example:
Yours sshuld be at least 4 or 5 slides in power point . Post them on your blog before thursday:

  • Magazine Analysis. Using the new terminology you have learnt today and the old skills you have practiced concerning Connotations. You need to analyse 2 magazine covers (that have different target audiences). Answering this question.

'How have these magazine covers been designed to target their audiences?'

This needs to be done for next Thursday.

You could choose the two below or two of your choice

  • So an amazing montage style video from Chase & Status that is a homage to 90s rave culture :

It fulfils some of the key criteria of the videos you are trying to make:

    1. It doesn't actually have anyone miming the words directly addressing the camera (youdont have to do this)
    2. Its a great example of how to take a potentially reptitive and boring technique like montage  and make it lively and exciting
    3. The vibe of the visuals matches that of the song
    4. It has lots of really interesting / fun exciting people and places / things to look at
    5. Its all set in places you could go to with normal everyday people mostly
    6. The storyline is extremely simple. Almost invisible !
    7. Its made on the cheap (although that adds to the quality of it)
    8. It almost looks amateurish but still feels professional
    9. Its fast paced and shows how you need loads of footage in order to keep your audience's attention
I could go on.. however it is a great video and you should try and keep watching videos from your genre all the time in order to steal cool ideas and be influenced by professionals.

Keep up the good work so far guys.. your videos are looking great !

  • So today's lesson will be looking at Mise en Scene in more detail:

Here is a clip i want you to write a short response:

'How did the director (Ridley Scott) manipulate mise en scene in this scene to create an impact on the audience?'

  • So we have officially started our production. You are going to make a school magazine and then a music magazine. One day, if you do well in AS media you could be working for an actual magazine company like this one below.
  • The illusion of choice. Pseudo-Individualisation. Democratisation. All of these things we will cover in today's lesson. Hopefully this will be something you keep in mind when studying the film industry this year. An example of how repetitive and formulaic Hollywood can be is below. After watching it errr ..get out of here !
